Moving inland and away from the architectural corruption of the Costa del Sol stumbling across the city of Cordoba is a breath of fresh air. Gone are the Plaza's and avenue's of other important Andalucian cities, you could be fooled into believing you had gone back centuries. Breathtaking, amazing and flamboyant are words associated with the grandeur of Seville the surprise of Malaga and the wealth of Granada. Yet Cordoba for all its understated charisma has an entirely individual appeal.

Crossing borders of any of the surrounding Provinces and you are immediately aware that Cordoba province and its towns are unique. The streets feel energized by people present and past, which is no coincidence considering its extravagant past.

Neolithic Cordoba and its history began during the bronze age, with inhabitants trading on the mineral rich territory. Founded by the Romans and known as Corduba in 152 BC it was the capital city of Hispania Ulterior and became known for its Olive Oil and Art.

During the pre AD period, the Cordoba region was famous not only for oil and minerals, but also for poets such as Seneca and Lucan, who lived there in a time when Cordoba city was accepted as the capital of the modern Andalucia.

Famed for its beautiful patios and terraces adorned with splashes of red geraniums and pelargonium Cordoba must be the province of colour. The town's streets have a renaissance feel and an atmosphere reminiscent of both French and Jewish quarters.

property in spainLooking on a map of Andalucia Cordoba appears to be inaccessible to the Costa del Sol. However driving through the Malaga mountains and veering between Granada and Seville province at Antequera, Cordoba is a stones throw away. On the edge of the Subettica national Park, Iznajar with its stunning lake side location is the first of many better known towns. Iznajar itself is newer than many of its contempories as the original village was flooded by the immense lakes that were dammed to provide water for the region throughout the year. During particularly hot summers, it is said that the bell tower of the original church is visible and the waves moving the bell makes it ring out across the waters.

Slightly further inland are the brightly decorated towns of Cabra, Lucena and Puente Genil similar in appeal to Cordoba itself offering the ideal place for new settlers to make their home. Small town houses make up the older areas of the towns whilst on the outskirts there are large villas. Those wanting to retire in the sun as well as young families wanting to make the most of the provinces culture and history should seriously consider these cosmopolitan settlements.
